Woking made it eight consecutive league wins in a row, with a hard-fought victory against Welling on a cold Wednesday evening.
A fist half header from Jack Cook and a second half strike from substitute Greg Luer was sufficient for the Cards to keep up the pace with Torquay at the top of the pile.
Manager Alan Dowson made three changes for Woking after the Cards suffered defeat at the hands of Watford in the FA Cup on Sunday.Harvey Bradbury, Armani Little and Paul Hodges were named in the Cards starting eleven. There was no place for Ben Gerring, who picked up an injury in the warm up before the game. Woking started the day five points behind leaders Torquay with three games in hand.
The Cards created the first chance of the game when a run by Armani Little was upended by Thierry Audel. The resulting free kick was hit along the ground and almost went into the corner of the net from Toby Edser.
Another set piece from the hosts gave them the lead after Little’s free kick was sliced by Arnaud Mendy with Jack Cook running in to send a simple header past Dan Wilks. The visitors though they had equalised on the stroke of half time when a free kick from the Wings caused chaos in the hosts area with two Welling players going up for the ball, following a scramble the ball fell to Bradley Goldberg who thought he had got the last touch, but the Assistant Referees flag was raised for offside.
Welling were having a purple patch in the second half- with set piece chances, when Cards Manager Dowson reacted by making a double substitution by bringing on Nicky Wheeler and Greg Luer. The second goal of the game was looking more and more likely to fall to the visitors and almost came following a free kick with a Danny Mills header beating Craig Ross but somehow coming off the bar and looking to go over the line before Christian Jolley cleared. Another free kick from the Wings was swung into the area with the ball falling to David Ijaha who blazed over.
With the Cards having to soak up a lot of pressure, it was the hosts who doubled their advantage in the 83rd minute when Greg Luer’s deflected shot looped over Dan Wilks into the net, to give Woking another victory, as they continue their relentless pursuit of Torquay at the top of the table.
