With Christmas rapidly approaching, once again it is the time for the traditional end of year tennis event, the Champions Tennis at the delightful venue of the Royal Albert Hall.
The opening afternoon session on Day One saw Tommy Haas and Xavier Malisse kick off the tournament with the opening singles in Group A.
Malisse, had to work hard for his victory, eventually defeating Haas in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.
In the evenings singles in Group B saw Croatian Goran Ivanisevic in action against Australian Mark Philippoussis.
The Australian took the first set 6-3 with Ivanisevic levelling the match by taking the second 6-3. The match went into a deciding championship tie break with the Croatian having a glorious chance to win the match, with the score on 9-8 he hit a smash straight into the net. Philippoussis saved match point and eventually went on to win an enthralling tie break 17-15 to record his opening victory in the tournament.
Friday afternoon’s singles match between Australian Mark Philippousis and the current holder, Spain’s Juan Carlos Ferrero. The match turned out to be a real classic which kept a big crowd enthralled throughout.
The Spaniard took the opening set 7-6 on the tie break(7-4). In another classic set which also went to a tie break, Ferrero wrapped up victory, winning the tie break 11-9 and opening his defence of the title with an opening win. For Philippoussis, it meant he had started his Group with two straight losses and won’t progress to the final.
