Essex completed their second County Championship victory of the season after a narrow 32 run victory against Worcestershire at New Road.
Essex won the toss and elected to bat first. On a wicket offering help to the bowlers the county champions were bowled out for 177 with Alastair Cook top scoring with 37. For the host the impressive Josh Tonge took 4-45. The visitors also found batting difficult, but managed to gain a first innings advantage of 61 runs thanks to a superb 105 from the very talented Joe Clarke. Cook was once again in the runs in the second innings when he made 66 with Dan Lawrence making a fine 71. Once again Tongue was the pick of the hosts attack, this time claiming 5-35 to finish with match figures of 9-80.
Set 215 to win Worcestershire almost reached their target, but thanks to Simon Harmer with 5-43 and Peter Siddle- on his final appearance for Essex this season- with 5-37 Essex squeezed home in a game that was a wonderful testament for four day championship cricket.
