Flames open up Challenge Cup campaign with win. 9th Sep.2018
9th SEPTEMBER 2018
Guildford opened their Challenge Cup campaign with a 2-1 home ice victory against the visiting Coventry Blaze on Saturday.
A power play goal in both the opening and third periods by John Dunbar was enough to give Flames an opening night victory.
A powerplay goal in the 13th minute, as the visitors David Clements was serving a Game Miscounduct penalty, saw the hosts open the scoring when Dunbar was quickest to react to a rebound to fire Flames into the lead. With just twenty seconds remaining and Flames Jesse Craige in the box for a two-minute holding penalty, Blaze drew level when Kelvin Ainsworth scored to make it 1-1 at the end of the opening period.
A goalless middle period, with Blaze outshooting Flames 12-7, set up a close game into the final period. Flames sealed the points when Dunbar picked up his brace for the evening on 44.36 with Blaze’s Nicolai Bryhnisveen serving a minor penalty for Holding. Flames pressed for a third goal but were denied by fine goaltending from Blaze’s Miika Wilkman.
Head Coach Paul Dixon said after the game, “It’s great to start the season off with a win on home ice”. I felt we got better as the game went on and we probably had the most sustained pressure of the night over the back part of the third period”. On an evening when scoring was a little tight, it was great to get such a solid outing from Chris(Carrozzi). He made some good saves at opportune times to make sure we didn’t fall behind”.
