24th January 2019
Guildford Flames will take a three-goal advantage to Nottingham in February when they face the Panthers in the second leg of the Elite League Cup, after completing a 5-2 victory at the Spectrum on Wednesday.
A crowd of over 1,900 were on their feet early on when Jamie Crooks converted Eric Lindhagen’s point shot to put Flames into an early lead inside the opening three minutes on the powerplay. Mark Hurtubise put away a loose puck to level the tie on 16.07. Lindhagen restored Guildford’s lead at 18.34, only for Panthers to tie the game at 2-2 when Alex Guptill shot into the roof of the net with just five seconds remaining of the 1st period.
Flames had a 5 on 3 advantage at 29.11 which they duly converted thanks to Ian Watters jammed home a rebound. Crooks then bagged his second of the night when he shot high into the roof of the net to give Flames a two-goal cushion with 39.02 showing on the clock.
Flames extended their advantage when Flames capitalised on another powerplay opportunity when Ben Davies scored at 41.08 to end the scoring for the night and give Guildford a handy three goal lead to take up to Nottingham for the 2nd leg on February 14th.
