Lakeside Hammers secured their play-off place in this seasons Premier League, after defeating Newcastle Diamonds 48-42 at their new home of Rye House on Saturday evening.
After beating the Diamonds, Hammers had to wait for news that Berwick had failed to claim all four points, despite victory at Ipswich, Hammers were confirmed certain of a play-off spot.
Richard Lawson led by example by claiming 13 points against Newcastle. The skipper was well backed up by Nick Morris who scored a paid 11 and Adam Ellis with 10 points. Local product Ben Morley picked up a paid 10 points on the night.
The second part of the double header saw Hammers slip to defeat against table topping Peterborough 50-40. Despite 18 points from Nick Morris, Hammers were always second best to a very good Peterborough side.
Lakeside will now join Glasgow, Workington and Peterborough in the end of season play-offs.
24 hours earlier on an emotional night at the Arena Essex Raceway, a big crowd witnessed the final ever meeting at the track.
Hammers defeated Glasgow 50-40 on the night with Lawson picking up a paid 13 points alongside 12 points from Adam Ellis and 11 from Morris.
Despite losing Zach Wajtknecht in heat 7 with a back injury after a bad crash, Hammers also had a concern with Nick Morris who had a bad crash in heat 15, but thankfully he walked away unscathed. Tigers, thanks mainly to 16 points from the very impressive Craig Cook, narrowed the gap to 20-16, with still a narrow four point gap after heat 9. In the next heat Hammers fans could relax a little after Morley and Lawson hit a 5-1 to stretch the gap to eight points. Another heat advantage in heat 12 from Ellis and Alfie Bowtell increased the lead to ten points, which hammers held on to for a last ever victory at the Raceway.
