Great Britain’s Jo Konta booked quarter final place in the Nature Valley open at Nottingham, after beating fellow compatriot Heather Watson in straight sets 6-4, 7-6. on Centre Court on Thursday afternoon.

Konta broke Watson in the fifth game of the opening set to take the opening set 6-4 inside 41 minutes.

Watson broke Konta for the first time in the match in the fourth game of the second set, only for Konta to break back in the seventh game. With the set going into a tie break, Konta served for the match at 6-4 in the tie break but Watson saved one match point before Konta served out for victory to take the tie break 7-5 inside an hour and 39 minutes.

Next up for the British Number One will be a match against Slovakian Dalila Jakupovic in the quarter finals.

Earlier, on a very windy centre court, holder of the Nottingham Open Donna Vekic moved into the quarter finals after a straight sets victory against Vera Lapko from Belarus.

Vekic broke Lapko in the sixth game of the opening set before taking the opener 6-2. In a much more contested second set it was Lapko who broke the current holder in the opening game with Vekic immediately breaking back. Lapko once again broke the Croation girl in the fifth game before Vekic pulled level at 4 -4. With Lapko serving for the set, Vekic had to save two set points as the set went to a tie break. At one stage Lapko led 6-4 in the tie break before Vekic levelled at 6-6 and eventually took the tie break 8-6 and the match in an hour and 49 minutes.

There was excellent news for Great Britain’s Katie Boulter, after the British Number 4 reached her first WTA quarter-final after beating former World Number 4 Sam Stour 7-6,6-1.

The 21-year-old wild card from Leicestershire saved a set point and edged the first set tie break, before winning five games in a row to claim victory in an hour and 18 minutes.

Boulter, will now face the Number 1 seed Ashleigh Barty in the quarter-finals , after the Australian defeated China’s Yingying Duan in straight sets.
