Pirates end home League campaign with victory. 17th Sep.2019
Poole Pirates completed their regular Premier League campaign with a victory over fellow play-off qualifiers Ipswich 51-39 at Wimborne Road on Monday.
Despite the win, they remain second in the table after Swindon completed a win at Kings Lynn. The Robins win meant that Pirates are a single point behind Swindon. The results on Monday have left Poole needing a victory against Kings Lynn in Norfolk on Thursday to finish top of the league.
Pirates were never behind against Ipswich, but it took them until the latter stages of the meeting to ensure victory. Once again reserve riders were pivotal in Poole’s success on the night with Tomas Jonasson and Ricky Wells picking up paid 14 points on the night with the Ipswich reserve due of James Sarjeant and Jake Allan scoring paid eight between them.
The first 5-1 heat advantage of the evening went to Poole in heat two after Tomas H Jonasson and his partner Ricky Wells finished one and two. Nicolai Klindt and Josh Grajczonek repeated the dose in the next heat to give the hosts a 13-5 lead after three heats. Witches responded in the next heat after Jake Allan and Danny King produced a 5-1 to claw the deficit back. A superb race in heat five saw Klindt just get the better of Niels Kristian Iversen to nudge Pirates six points clear.
By the half way point of the meeting the Ipswich pairing of Richard Lawson and Chris Harris with a 5-1 had cut the gap to just a couple of points before Poole hit back with another 5-1, thanks to Nico Covatti and Wells.
Both sides shared 5-1 heat advantages in heats ten and eleven before an eventful heat 12 saw Klindt leading, only for his rear chain coming off to leave Ipswich through Harris and James Sarjeant to register a 5-1, with the visitors trailing by four points.
Poole had the meeting won after heat 14 when Grajczonek won the race, with Pirates getting a 4-2. The icing on the cake for the hosts came in the final heat when Jack Holder partnered Grajczonek to a 5-1 heat advantage to send the home fans home happy but having an anxious wait until Thursday.
