Surrey Scorchers endured a heart-breaking loss in overtime at the hands of Esh Group Eagles Newcastle in the BBL Championship at Surrey Sports Park on Sunday afternoon 93-89.
A dramatic equaliser on the buzzer from Anthony Elechi drew Scorchers level and sent the game into OT.
At the end of a very well contested opening quarter it was Scorchers who held a three-point lead. Elechi’s rebounds along with some fine work from Morakinyo Williams- who was playing with a bad back- made sure that despite Eagles fighting back, both sides would go into the break level at 47-47.
Scorchers again took the game to the Eagles in the third period with Captain Tayo Ogedengbe and Caylin Raftopoulos hitting a series of vital 3-point shots to give the hosts a slight edge heading into the final quarter.
It was the turn of the visitors to show they were now up for the fight as they hit back, forcing Scorchers into fouls. Eagles took advantage of this and eventually pulled into a three-point lead with just seconds remaining. Raftopoulos’s shot came off the rim and all seemed lost for Scorchers until Elechi sent a perfect shot from beyond the arc to draw the scores level.
Despite a valiant attempt from Scorchers it was the visitors who claimed the win after over time, but the home crowd went away praising an incredible effort from the home sides, who ran a very good Newcastle side oh so close.
Mo Williams hit 24 points for the Surrey side with Elechi scoring 20. For the Eagles it was Jeremy Smith who led the way with 31 points.
