Surrey Scorchers crashed out of the BBL Cup at the first hurdle after suffering a 92-75 defeat against the visiting Manchester Giants at Surrey Sports Park on Sunday afternoon.
The opening quarter was shaded by the hosts as Scorchers went into the buzzer with a narrow four-point lead at 25-21.
An even second quarter saw the visitors go into the break with a one-point advantage with the scoreboard showing 45-44 to the Giants.
Heading in to the third quarter it was all to play for, however Giants player Wille Clayton changed the game as the home side struggled to deal with the big man, but thanks to a massive three-point throw right on the buzzer, Scorchers had reduced the gap to four points with the Giants taking a four-point cushion into the final quarter.
Unfortunately for Scorchers the Giants ran away with the game as the visitors ran out 92-75 winners.
For Scorchers, Jordan Williams top scored with 15 points and Quincy Taylor. Giants were also helped with 19 points from Mike McCall Jnr.
Coach Creon Rafttopoulos was disappointed with the result. He said “It was not a great team performance. All week we spoke about the threat of Willie Clayton and rebounding. He’s finished the game with 23 points and 25 rebounds. He’s almost out-rebounded our team by himself”.
