Surrey Scorchers were crowned British Basketball All-Stars Champions at the Copper Box Arena in London on Sunday, after completing a 36-33 overtime victory against the Leicester Riders.
Scorchers and Riders battled it out for 12 gripping minutes but couldn’t be separated in regulation time. In the additional 60 seconds it was MVP Jordan Williams who made the decisive points as Scorchers claimed their first piece of silverware.
Having started the tournament with a defeat against Brystol Flyers, Scorchers had it all to do for the rest of the afternoon. However, a dominate performance against Worcester Wolves 49-17 gave them a second chance to make their way to the semi-final stage of the tournament.
Flyers and Scorchers locked horns once again in the afternoon with Scorchers coming out on top 36-27 to book their place in the final four.
In the semi-final Scorchers despatched Newcastle Eagles 34-24, while in the other semi-final Riders knocked out the defending champions London Lions 36-26.
Having began the day as underdogs, Scorchers ended it as Champions.
Williams was a very happy man after the final. “I feel great” he said. “We have had a rough start to the season, but I feel like in this tournament we came together and played as a team.”
Coach Creon Raftopoulos couldn’t hide his happiness at the end of the final. “I am so happy for these guys. We came in here, I don’t think many people gave us a chance, but it is a format of basketball that plays into our up-tempo style, so it worked out for us. Last year we had a lot of emotions, me personally with my dad, so I wasn’t in the right frame of mind, so to come here and be able to coach to a level that allowed the players to win was absolutely great.”
