Scorchers edge out Royals in New Year’s Day Thriller.

 In Recent, SURREY SCORCHERS

2nd January 2018

Surrey Scorchers started the New Year in fine fashion with a narrow 93-91 victory against London City Royals at Surrey Sports Park on New Year’s Day.

Scorchers in front of a sold out venue, were led by a sensational display from Quincy Taylor, as the hosts picked up their third win in this seasons BBL Championship.

New Year’s Day 2018 was the game that fans say turned the corner for Scorchers last season, with the win giving the Surrey outfit a platform to build on for the remaining part of the season.

Ex Scorchers Will Neighbour and Elvisi Dusha lined up for the Royals, but it was Taylor who took all the headlines. In the first half alone he was unstoppable, racking up an incredible 25 points, before finishing the game with a career-high 42 points with seven assists and six rebounds.

Royals had the better of the opening quarter before a flurry of points from Taylor saw Scorchers take a five-point lead.

In the second quarter, Taylor didn’t miss one basket, but Royals hung on to close the first half just two points down.

By the third quarter Scorchers had extended the gap to seven points. In the final quarter Scorchers looked to be in control of the game with an eleven-point cushion before having to fend off a great fightback from the visitors. Ed Lucas hit a big three-point bucket to bring the game level. With only two seconds remaining in the game and with the score 91-91, Neighbour fouled Ryan Richards, with Richards responding with two free throws to clinch victory.

Captain Tayo Ogedengbe said after the game. “We’ve been through it this season, these guys that you saw on the court today have been through everything. As you can see we played with heart and gave it all we got”.
