Surrey Scorchers lost out on the road to the table toping London Lions 93-79 at the Copper Box on Friday.
Despite a slow start that saw Scorchers down early on, the visitors steadily pulled themselves back into the game with an early 16-11 lead. However, a fine display from reigning BBL MVP Justin Robinson helped the hosts draw level at the end of the opening quarter 21-21.
The home side started to prove their dominance in the second quarter, despite some fine shooting from Morakinyo Williams, combined with a combination of 3-point shots from debutant Chaed Wellian, it was the home side who went into the buzzer with a 14-point advantage at 51-37, as they took the quarter 30-16.
Scorchers kept tabs with Lions in the third quarter, with the hosts shading the period 23-22. In the final quarter it was Quincy Taylor driving Scorchers forward as the visitors reduced the deficit to just eight points with five minutes remaining, only for a combination of a series of fouls, technical and unsportsmanlike calls from the visitors, finally put the nail in the coffin with the hosts seizing the opportunity to close out victory for their seventh straight victory to maintain their position at the top of the table.
Williams top scored for Scorchers with 14 points with debutant Wellian scoring 12. For Lions the impressive Robinson picked up a career best 31 points, with extra assistant from Ladarius Tabb 23.
