Scorchers Select just fail to visiting Braves
1st AUGUST 2018
On a week that has seen Captain Tayo Ogedengbe re-sign for Scorchers for the forthcoming season, on Tuesday evening a Surrey Scorchers Select side-captained by Ogedengbe- were in action with the Bradley University Braves paying a visit to Surrey from the USA.
The Braves were quickly into their stride by opening up a 7-0 lead. The visitors from the states who had been playing together for a while, extended their advantage to take the opening quarter 22-12, which could have been worse, but for a three point bucket from Josh Steele with seconds remaining.
As Scorchers tried to get a foot hold into the game, the visitors ended the half time buzzer in a comfortable position by leading 43-23.
The half time break seemed to fire Scorchers into life as they gradually began getting themselves back into the match. Steele, Ogedengbe and Martelle Mclemore- formerly of Surrey Heat- linked up well for some very impressive plays. At one point the Scorchers Select had reduced the gap to just three points. The hosts taking the third quarter 27-12, to reduce the overall score to five points at 55-50.
The Scorchers Select- coached by Caylin Raftopoulos- continued to claw away at the score and at one stage it was only a two point game, with five minutes remaining, but the visitors drew on their experience to take a very entertaining game 73-66.
